Maiden Voyage, Herbie Hancock’s fifth album, was recorded in March 1965 and released in 1965. It features Hancock with George Coleman, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. The concept album aims to create an oceanic atmosphere, with track titles referring to marine biology or the sea. The musicians use space to develop the concept. The album received the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1999.

The Penguin Guide to Jazz rated it four stars, calling it a “colossal achievement” from Hancock at 24. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic described it as Hancock’s finest ‘60s record, balancing accessible jazz with hard bop.
