NEW DOUBLE LP
New sealed copy. 2025 limited edition reissue on forest green coloured vinyl.
With L’Enfant Sauvage, their fifth studio album and first for Roadrunner Records, Gojira refined their singular brand of progressive extreme metal into something both more expansive and more direct. Released in June 2012, the album was co-produced by frontman Joe Duplantier and Josh Wilbur, and tracked between the band’s home base in southwest France and a New York studio.
Thematically, the album draws from François Truffaut’s film L’Enfant Sauvage, exploring freedom, identity, and the weight of inherited guilt. Duplantier, a new father during the album’s creation, wrestles openly with existential questions—what it means to be human, to be free, and to carry emotional legacies—through lyrics that echo his long-held philosophical obsessions.
Musically, Gojira dialed up the power and density, constructing towering, immersive compositions with an emphasis on scale and drama. Tracks like “Explosia,” “Liquid Fire,” and “Born in Winter” showcase the band’s balance of technicality and raw force, while “The Gift of Guilt” stands out as an emotional and sonic apex.
Though a planned tour with Lamb of God and Dethklok was scrapped due to external circumstances, Gojira launched a successful headlining run in 2013, joined by The Devin Townsend Project and The Atlas Moth. A companion live release, Les Enfants Sauvages, followed in 2014, capturing their global tour and including a photo book chronicling life on the road.
Critics widely praised L’Enfant Sauvage, with a Metacritic score of 86. The BBC called it “as flawless an extreme metal album as you'll hear,” and The Guardian lauded it as “ferociously original,” highlighting its mix of sonic brutality and existential depth.
