Dark Horse is the fifth studio album by George Harrison, released in December 1974 on Apple Records. Recorded during a time of personal upheaval for Harrison, the album reflects his split from his wife Pattie Boyd and a temporary retreat from his previously steadfast spiritual focus. Despite its keenly anticipated release, Dark Horse was overshadowed by Harrison’s North American tour with Ravi Shankar, where his laryngitis and the tour’s unexpected emphasis on Indian music led to mixed reviews from the press.
The album saw Harrison exploring funk and soul influences and featured contributions from Tom Scott, Billy Preston, Willie Weeks, Andy Newmark, Jim Keltner, Ringo Starr, Gary Wright and Ron Wood. It included the singles "Dark Horse" and "Ding Dong, Ding Dong", both of which had some chart success. Although the album reached number 4 on Billboard’s albums chart and entered the top ten in parts of Europe, it did not chart in the UK, marking a first in Harrison's post-Beatles solo career. The album cover, designed by Tom Wilkes, uses a childhood photo of Harrison set against a Himalayan backdrop.
