Free Your Mind... and Your Ass Will Follow is the second album by Funkadelic, released in 1970 on Westbound Records. Building on the psychedelic soul and funk foundations of the band's debut, the album pushes further into experimental territory, combining distorted guitars, extended improvisation, and studio effects with George Clinton's evolving vision of funk as both a musical and philosophical movement.
The record is centred around the thirteen minute title track, an expansive blend of psychedelic rock, funk, and spoken word that reflects the album's themes of personal liberation, spirituality, and social critique. Throughout the album, Funkadelic mixes heavy grooves with surreal lyrics, drawing from gospel, soul, and rock while challenging conventional ideas about religion, authority, and consumer culture.
Although it was only a modest commercial success at the time, Free Your Mind... and Your Ass Will Follow has since become one of the defining releases of early Funkadelic. Its fusion of psychedelic rock and funk helped establish the group's distinctive sound and laid the groundwork for the more ambitious records that followed.
