In the Wee Small Hours is the ninth studio album by Frank Sinatra, released in 1955 through Capitol Records. Produced by Voyle Gilmore with arrangements by Nelson Riddle, the album was conceived as a unified collection centred on loneliness, failed relationships, and late night reflection rather than as a collection of unrelated singles.
Most of the material comes from the Great American Songbook, including “I Get Along Without You Very Well”, “Mood Indigo”, “It Never Entered My Mind”, and “When Your Lover Has Gone”. Riddle’s arrangements range from sparse small group settings to fuller orchestral passages, giving Sinatra room to use a more restrained and rhythmically flexible vocal style.
The album reached number two on the Billboard albums chart and remained there for 18 weeks. Its sustained thematic approach and sequencing also contributed to its reputation as an early example of the pop concept album.
