Torches is the debut album by Foster the People, released in 2011 through Startime International and Columbia Records. Built around a mix of indie pop, electronic production, and dance oriented rhythms, the album emerged following the breakout success of “Pumped Up Kicks”, which became one of the defining alternative pop singles of the early 2010s.

Written largely after the band signed with Startime, the album expanded on the sound of “Pumped Up Kicks” with tracks like “Helena Beat”, “Call It What You Want”, “Houdini”, and “Don’t Stop (Color on the Walls)”. While the music often carried bright, upbeat production, many of the lyrics explored darker themes involving isolation, anxiety, and social disconnection.

The album received generally positive reviews and was praised for its blend of indie pop and electronic influences. Torches was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the Grammy Awards, reached the top ten on the Billboard 200, and went on to achieve platinum sales in multiple countries.
