Future Games is Fleetwood Mac’s fifth studio album, released in September 1971. It marked a turning point for the band, being the first record to feature Christine McVie as a full member and the first of five albums with American guitarist Bob Welch.
Recorded in London, the album moves Fleetwood Mac further away from their earlier blues roots toward a more melodic, atmospheric rock sound. Welch’s arrival brought a different musical sensibility to the group, while Danny Kirwan remained a central songwriter, contributing to half of the record. One track, “What a Shame,” was recorded quickly after Reprise insisted the album contain eight songs rather than seven.
Future Games had modest commercial success at the time, peaking at number 91 on the US Billboard chart, but it has since been reassessed as an important transitional record in the band’s evolution. It was eventually certified gold in the United States in 2000.
The cover photograph was shot by Mick Fleetwood’s sister Sally, while the back sleeve famously replaced John McVie’s portrait with his own photograph of a penguin from the London Zoo, an image that later became a recurring Fleetwood Mac motif.
