No Angel is the debut studio album by English singer-songwriter Dido, released on June 1, 1999, through Arista Records and Cheeky Records. Initially recorded between 1995 and 1999, the album was shaped by Dido’s introspective songwriting and collaborations with her brother Rollo Armstrong of Faithless. Drawing from folk-pop, trip hop, and electronica, No Angel blends organic instrumentation with textured production, exploring themes of love, independence, and vulnerability. Its understated style and atmospheric sound distinguished it from the mainstream pop landscape of the late 1990s.
Though a modest release at first, No Angel gradually became a global phenomenon. Its breakout came when Eminem sampled “Thank You” for his hit “Stan,” propelling Dido to international recognition. Singles “Here with Me,” “Thank You,” and “Hunter” followed, each receiving heavy airplay and cementing her crossover appeal. By late 2000, the record had topped charts across Europe and the US, ultimately becoming one of the best-selling albums of 2001.
Celebrated for its emotive vocals and subtle production, No Angel went on to sell over 15 million copies worldwide. It earned Dido numerous accolades, including British Album of the Year at the 2002 Brit Awards. With its blend of electronic nuance and heartfelt songwriting, the album stands as a defining work of turn-of-the-century pop and a lasting testament to Dido’s quiet, confessional approach.
