Released in September 1982 on New Alliance Records, Milo Goes to College marked the full-length debut of southern California’s Descendents. Its title reflected singer Milo Aukerman’s decision to leave the band to pursue higher education, and the now-iconic cover introduced the cartoon caricature of Aukerman that would become a lasting symbol for the group.
Musically, the album combined the speed and aggression of early hardcore punk with melodic hooks and tongue-in-cheek love songs, creating a style that set the band apart from their contemporaries. That balance of raw energy and tunefulness proved enormously influential, laying the foundation for what would later become the pop punk movement.
Though initially an underground release, the record has grown in stature over the decades, frequently cited by critics and fellow musicians as one of the defining punk albums of the early 1980s. Its influence can be heard across generations, from hardcore bands to mainstream pop punk acts, cementing Milo Goes to College as a cornerstone of punk history.
