Gore is the eighth studio album by Deftones, released in 2016 through Reprise Records. Written during sessions that began in 2014, the album continued the band’s move toward a more atmospheric and experimental sound, blending alternative metal with elements of post punk, space rock, and shoegaze.
Much of the album’s identity came from the creative tension between vocalist Chino Moreno and guitarist Stephen Carpenter, whose contrasting influences shaped the record’s sound. Songs like “Prayers / Triangles”, “Hearts / Wires”, and “Phantom Bride” balance melodic textures with heavier guitar work, while guest guitarist Jerry Cantrell appears on “Phantom Bride”.
Upon release, Gore debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and received strong critical reviews for its adventurous songwriting and evolving sound. Critics frequently highlighted the album’s balance between heaviness and atmosphere, viewing it as another example of Deftones continuing to push beyond the boundaries of alternative metal.
