Something About Airplanes is the debut album by Death Cab for Cutie, released on August 18, 1998 through Barsuk Records. Recorded in a rented house in Bellingham, Washington on a reel to reel eight track setup, the album captures the band in its earliest form, with singer and songwriter Ben Gibbard developing the introspective style that would later define the group’s work.
The songs reflect the influence of late 1990s indie rock, particularly bands such as Built to Spill, with understated arrangements and densely written lyrics. The recording process was equally modest, with vocals tracked in the living room while a microphone ran through the floor from the attic bedroom where guitarist and producer Chris Walla was set up. The result is a lo fi sound that gives the record a quiet, intimate atmosphere.
