Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables is the debut album by Dead Kennedys, released in 1980. Blending hardcore punk, surf rock, and garage rock influences, the album established the San Francisco band as one of the most politically outspoken and satirical voices of the American punk movement.
The record features some of the band's best known songs, including “Holiday in Cambodia”, “California Über Alles”, “Kill the Poor”, and “Let's Lynch the Landlord”. Led by Jello Biafra's distinctive vocals and sharply critical lyrics, the album addresses politics, consumerism, media, and social inequality through a mix of dark humour and confrontational punk energy.
Widely regarded as one of the defining punk albums of the early 1980s, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables has had a lasting influence on hardcore and alternative music. Its combination of fast paced musicianship, pointed social commentary, and memorable songwriting continues to make it one of Dead Kennedys' most celebrated releases.
