Heavy Axe is a 1974 album by American composer, arranger, and producer David Axelrod, released through Fantasy Records. It was Axelrod's first album for Fantasy under his own name and his first solo record not built around a larger concept. Cannonball Adderley produced the album, reversing their usual working relationship in which Axelrod had produced and arranged recordings for Adderley.
Axelrod arranged and conducted a large ensemble combining strings, horns, electric keyboards, guitars, congas, drums, and backing vocals. The musicians include George Duke, Johnny Guitar Watson, Roy McCurdy, King Errisson, Cannonball Adderley, and Gene Ammons. The album mixes Axelrod compositions with versions of Vince Guaraldi's "Cast Your Fate to the Wind," Carly Simon's "You're So Vain," Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing," and Adderley's "Get Up Off Your Knees."
Heavy Axe combines jazz, funk, soul, and orchestral arrangements in a style closely associated with Axelrod's 1970s work.
