Recovering the Satellites is the second studio album by Counting Crows, released in the United States on October 15 1996. Recorded after two years of extensive touring, the album followed the band’s debut August and Everything After and was produced by Gil Norton. It features founding members Adam Duritz, David Bryson, Charlie Gillingham, and Matt Malley, with Ben Mize joining on drums and Dan Vickrey on guitar. David Immerglück also contributed as a session musician.
The album produced three singles, with “A Long December” becoming the most successful, reaching number six on the United States Radio Songs chart and number one in Canada. Recovering the Satellites reached number one on the United States album chart and charted in the top ten in several other countries. It was certified double platinum in the United States and Canada and received generally positive critical response.
Recording took place in a rented house, continuing the band’s preference for using residential spaces as recording environments. The album expanded on the sound of their debut while presenting more restrained and introspective material, marking a significant point in the group’s mid nineteen nineties career.
