Chet Baker's Chet, subtitled The Lyrical Trumpet of Chet Baker, was first released in 1959 on the Riverside label. Recorded in December 1958 and January 1959, the album features Baker with alto flautist Herbie Mann, baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams, pianist Bill Evans, guitarist Kenny Burrell, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummers Connie Kay and Philly Joe Jones. The Chambers-Evans-Jones rhythm section was known at the time for their work with Miles Davis.
Though Baker was known as much for his singing as his trumpet playing by the late 1950s, this album is entirely instrumental. It contains nine standard ballads played in styles ranging from hard bop to cool jazz, with the CD version including the Chet Baker composition "Early Morning Mood" as a bonus track. Despite being devoted to explorations of the ballad mood, the album includes considerable variety.
AllMusic awarded the album four stars, stating that "Chet is a good album to hear Baker's special way with the horn, and is made even more attractive with the presence and contributions of top jazz artists."
