Chet Baker Sings is the debut vocal album by Chet Baker, released in 1954 through Pacific Jazz Records. Until this point, Baker had been known primarily as a trumpeter, making the album an important shift in his early career.
Recorded in Hollywood, the album pairs Baker’s restrained singing with small group jazz arrangements led by pianist Russ Freeman. Standards such as “My Funny Valentine”, “I Fall in Love Too Easily”, and “The Thrill Is Gone” are delivered with the same cool, understated phrasing that characterized Baker’s trumpet playing.
Baker continued to perform several of these songs throughout his career, particularly “My Funny Valentine”. The album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001.
