The Prophet is an album by vibraphonist Cal Tjader, recorded in Los Angeles in 1967 and released the following year on Verve Records. Produced by Esmond Edwards and arranged by Don Sebesky, it places Tjader’s Latin jazz foundation within a more orchestrated setting.
The ensemble includes João Donato on organ, Hubert Laws on flute, Red Mitchell on bass, and Ed Thigpen on drums. Donato contributed several compositions, including “Warm Song”, “Aquarius”, and “Tema Teimoso”, bringing Brazilian harmony and bossa nova influence to the record.
From the restrained mood of “The Loner” to the blues based “Cal’s Bluedoo”, the album balances detailed arrangements with Tjader’s melodic, rhythmically precise playing.
