Bright Eyes' sixth studio album, I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, was released on January 25, 2005, through Saddle Creek Records, the same day as their seventh album Digital Ash in a Digital Urn. The album marked the first Bright Eyes release to feature Nate Walcott, who became a permanent member of the band. "Road to Joy" contains an interpolation of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy," and the album's title is taken from a lyric in that song.

Bright Eyes achieved chart success when singles "Lua" and "Take It Easy (Love Nothing)" (from Digital Ash) took the top two positions on the Billboard Hot Singles Sales chart in 2004. Both albums made the top 20 of the Billboard albums charts, with I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning peaking at number 10 on the Billboard 200 and number 2 on the Billboard Independent Albums chart. The band embarked on a two-part world tour promoting both albums, with the first half centered on the folk-influenced I'm Wide Awake and the latter half featuring the more electronic Digital Ash.

Critics widely praised the album, which received a Metacritic score of 85/100 indicating "universal acclaim." Pitchfork awarded it 8.7/10, while the Los Angeles Times called it "an album with the simmering glow of a masterpiece." The album sold 522,000 copies in the US by 2014 and received gold certification from the Independent Music Companies Association. It ranked number 8 on Rolling Stone's best albums of 2005 and number 50 on their Top 100 Albums of the Decade.
