Components is a 1966 Blue Note album by jazz vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson. The record is split into two distinct sections, with the first side built around Hutcherson's hard bop compositions and the second side devoted to more avant garde pieces written by drummer Joe Chambers.
Hutcherson's side includes “Tranquillity”, “Little B's Poem”, and “West 22nd Street Theme”, each balancing melodic clarity with subtle rhythmic movement. Chambers' compositions on side two move further into open form and free counterpoint, with pieces such as “Movement”, “Air”, and “Pastoral” emphasizing interaction between independent instrumental voices.
The album reflects Hutcherson's position within Blue Note's mid 1960s catalogue, where hard bop, modal jazz, and more experimental approaches often overlapped. Components presents both sides of that period in a structured way, moving from accessible groove based writing into looser, more exploratory material.
