3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life Of... is the debut studio album by Arrested Development, released in 1992 through Chrysalis Records. Its title refers to the time the group spent pursuing a recording contract.
The album combines hip hop with soul, funk, gospel, and Southern musical influences, while its lyrics focus on spirituality, community, poverty, and personal responsibility. “Tennessee”, “People Everyday”, and “Mr. Wendal” became the record’s best known songs, distinguishing the group from the harder edged rap dominating the charts at the time.
The album’s commercial success brought wider attention to Southern hip hop and helped establish an alternative path within the genre during the early 1990s.
