The Composer of Desafinado, Plays is the 1963 debut album by Antônio Carlos Jobim, presenting a set of instrumental bossa nova compositions arranged by Claus Ogerman. The project marked the beginning of a long and defining collaboration between the two, pairing Jobim’s understated melodic sensibility with Ogerman’s elegant orchestral writing.

Across twelve tracks, Jobim performs on both guitar and piano, despite early pressure from American producers to lean exclusively into the “Latin guitarist” image. The album includes early versions of what would become standards, most notably “The Girl from Ipanema,” later a global hit in 1964 through the Astrud Gilberto and Stan Getz recording.

Widely regarded as a cornerstone of bossa nova, the album has earned significant historical recognition. It was inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001 and ranked number 58 by Rolling Stone Brasil in its list of the 100 greatest Brazilian albums. DownBeat’s Pete Welding summarized its impact simply: if bossa nova had produced only this record, “it would already be fully justified.”
