Unplugged is a live album by Alice in Chains, released in 1996 through Columbia Records. Recorded on April 10 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music for MTV Unplugged, it marked the band’s first concert appearance in more than two years and featured vocalist Layne Staley, guitarist and vocalist Jerry Cantrell, bassist Mike Inez, drummer Sean Kinney, and guest guitarist Scott Olson.
The performance recasts songs such as “Nutshell”, “Down in a Hole”, “Rooster”, “Would?”, and “Over Now” with acoustic guitars, restrained percussion, and the close vocal harmonies of Staley and Cantrell. The set draws from Sap, Jar of Flies, Dirt, and Alice in Chains, and also introduces the previously unreleased “Killer Is Me”.
Unplugged debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and was later certified double platinum in the United States. It was also Alice in Chains’ final headlining performance with Staley.
