The Virgin Suicides is the original score composed by Air for Sofia Coppola’s 1999 film of the same name. Released in 2000 by Virgin Records, it was written to accompany the film’s restrained depiction of adolescence, isolation, and memory.
The music combines analogue synthesizers, bass, drums, electric piano, and orchestral textures, moving between slow instrumental passages and more structured songs. “Playground Love”, featuring vocals by Thomas Mars, serves as the album’s central vocal piece, while much of the score relies on repetition, soft dynamics, and muted psychedelic influences.
Although created for the film, the album was arranged to function independently as a complete listening experience. It was nominated for Best Soundtrack at the 2001 Brit Awards.
