Mer de Noms is the debut album by A Perfect Circle, released in May 2000. Formed by guitarist Billy Howerdel and Tool vocalist Maynard James Keenan, the band blended alternative rock, hard rock, and progressive influences into a darker, more melodic sound than Keenan’s work with Tool. The album features songs like “Judith”, “3 Libras”, and “The Hollow”, all of which became rock radio hits.
Much of the album’s material was built around Howerdel’s earlier demos, while the lyrics largely reference people from Keenan’s life, reflected in titles such as “Judith”, “Magdalena”, and “Orestes”. The record also incorporates violin, acoustic guitars, and layered production alongside heavier guitar driven arrangements.
The album debuted at number four on the Billboard 200, setting a record at the time for the highest chart debut by a rock band’s first album. It was later certified platinum and remains one of the defining alternative rock releases of the early 2000s.
