Released in April 1974, Second Helping was the album that solidified Lynyrd Skynyrd as a major force in Southern rock. Anchored by the hit single “Sweet Home Alabama” — an answer song to Neil Young’s “Alabama” and “Southern Man” — the album reached number 12 on the Billboard charts and was certified Gold within five months of release. It eventually earned double platinum status in 1987.

Building on the raw energy of their debut, the band refined their sound with tighter arrangements and an unmistakable swagger. Ed King, Allen Collins, and Gary Rossington combined with Ronnie Van Zant to deliver songs that balanced bluesy rockers with folk-inflected ballads, captured in tracks like “The Ballad of Curtis Loew” and “Workin’ for MCA.” While early reviews were mixed, later critics recognized the album as an essential piece of the Southern rock puzzle, with Rolling Stone praising its relaxed yet assured confidence.
