Released on November 9, 1976, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers introduced the world to a band that would become one of American rock’s most enduring acts. Issued by Shelter Records and recorded in Hollywood, the album initially struggled for attention in the United States but found early traction in the UK, where the single Anything That's Rock 'n' Roll became a hit.
In time, the record earned a broader audience, eventually climbing the U.S. charts and going Gold by 1978. It features Breakdown, the band’s first U.S. Top 40 hit, and American Girl, a song that would go on to define Petty’s legacy—blending chiming guitars, open-road longing and Southern cool in equal measure.
