American Life is the ninth studio album by Madonna, released in April 2003 through Maverick and Warner Bros. Records. Produced by Madonna and Mirwais Ahmadzaï, the album continued their collaboration from Music while moving toward a more stripped down combination of acoustic guitar, electronic programming, synthesizers, and processed vocals.
The record was developed during a period of political and cultural uncertainty in the United States, and its lyrics examine materialism, fame, the American Dream, and Madonna's own relationship with wealth and celebrity. Alongside those themes, songs such as "Nothing Fails," "Intervention," "Mother and Father," and "Easy Ride" address relationships, family, identity, and personal responsibility. Musically, the album draws on folk, electronic music, and Eurotechno, using deliberately sparse arrangements and heavily manipulated digital production.
American Life received mixed reviews on release but reached number one in 14 countries, including the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. It was also Madonna's final studio album for Maverick Records, closing an eleven year association with the label.
