Peter Gabriel is the second solo album by Peter Gabriel, released on June 2 1978 by Charisma Records. Often referred to as Scratch to distinguish it from his other self titled albums, the record followed his debut and was recorded shortly after the completion of its supporting tour. Gabriel worked with Robert Fripp as producer, marking a shift toward a more spontaneous and stripped back studio approach.
The album favors direct performances and minimal production, with Fripp emphasizing immediacy and limited repetition in the studio. Fripp’s Frippertronics technique appears on the co written track “Exposure,” and his production choices leaned toward dry mixes with restrained use of effects. The sessions reflected Gabriel’s growing confidence as an arranger and songwriter while also revealing creative tensions between artist and producer.
Peter Gabriel reached number ten on the United Kingdom Albums Chart and number forty five on the United States Billboard Pop Albums chart. The cover artwork by Hipgnosis, depicting Gabriel appearing to tear through his own image, became closely associated with the album and contributed to its Scratch nickname.
