Individual Thought Patterns is the fifth studio album by Death, released in 1993 through Relativity Records. Building on the technical direction of Human, the album combines death metal with increasingly progressive songwriting, complex rhythms, fretless bass, and prominent lead guitar work.
The lineup features Chuck Schuldiner with guitarist Andy LaRocque, bassist Steve Di Giorgio, and drummer Gene Hoglan, marking LaRocque's only appearance with Death and Hoglan's first. Songs such as "Trapped in a Corner" and "The Philosopher" reflect the band's shift toward more intricate and melodic arrangements, while "The Philosopher" became one of Death's most widely recognized tracks through its MTV airplay.
