Danzig is the debut album by Danzig, released in August 1988 on Rick Rubin’s Def American Recordings. It introduced the band’s original lineup of Glenn Danzig, guitarist John Christ, bassist Eerie Von, and drummer Chuck Biscuits, and was recorded between late 1987 and early 1988. The record blends heavy, riff driven rock with strong blues influences, establishing the darker, stripped down sound that would define the band’s early years.
Songs such as “Twist of Cain,” “Am I Demon,” and “She Rides” showcase the band’s raw approach, pairing simple but powerful guitar work with Glenn Danzig’s deep, dramatic vocals. The album also includes “Mother,” which later became the band’s best known song after a live version received significant radio and MTV play in the early 1990s.
The album’s stark cover, featuring the now iconic skull emblem against a black background, quickly became synonymous with the band. Over time the record has remained their best selling release and continues to stand as the foundation of the band’s catalog.
