Small Talk is the fourth studio album by Chicago duo Whitney, released on November 7, 2025. Following their 2022 record Spark, the album marks a deliberate return to the warmth and introspection that defined their earlier sound. Written and self-produced by Julien Ehrlich and Max Kakacek, Small Talk was recorded in 2024 at Ehrlich’s father’s barn in Newberg, Oregon, a setting that helped the band rediscover their stripped-down creative dynamic.
The sessions were guided by a do-it-yourself philosophy that emphasized imperfection and spontaneity, echoing classic touchstones like Big Star. The resulting album pairs Whitney’s familiar soft-focus soul and country influences with a renewed clarity and confidence. Tracks such as The Thread and Dandelions reflect the duo’s melodic strength, while Won’t You Speak Your Mind? introduces a sleek pop edge. Madison Cunningham’s guest appearance on Evangeline adds emotional contrast to a record built around connection, loss, and renewal.
