Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space is the third studio album by Spiritualized, released on June 16 1997. Recorded between 1995 and 1997 in several English and American studios, the album brought together the core band with contributions from the Balanescu Quartet, the London Community Gospel Choir, and Dr John. The sessions combined live ensemble recording with sequenced material and extensive overdubs, reflecting Jason Pierce’s studio based approach during this period.
The original pressing included a version of the title track that used lyrics and melody from Elvis Presley’s Cant Help Falling in Love. A revised version appeared on the commercial release following an objection from the Presley estate, though later editions restored the original version with an adjusted title credit.
The album draws from space rock, neo psychedelia, shoegaze, gospel, and blues, and it became a significant release within British alternative music during the late nineteen nineties. It reached number four on the United Kingdom chart and produced singles including Electricity, I Think Im in Love, and Come Together. Several songs were later re recorded for the Abbey Road EP in 1998. Material from the album was performed live in full in 2009 as part of the Dont Look Back concert series, accompanied by a remastered edition issued in multiple formats.
Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space has since appeared on numerous decade end and all time lists and remains one of the most widely recognized works in the Spiritualized catalog.
