Psychocandy is the debut studio album by Scottish rock band the Jesus and Mary Chain, released in November 1985 on Blanco y Negro Records. Blending distorted guitar feedback with melodic pop structures, the record became a defining release of 1980s alternative rock and a key influence on the emerging shoegaze movement.

Recorded in six weeks at Southern Studios in North London with engineer John Loder, Psychocandy fused 1960s-inspired songwriting with abrasive production. Its mix of noise and melody drew from the Velvet Underground, the Beach Boys, and the Shangri-Las, while Jim and William Reid’s minimalist approach gave the songs a raw immediacy. The album includes the singles Never Understand, You Trip Me Up, and Just Like Honey, which later gained renewed attention through its use in Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation (2003).

Upon release, Psychocandy reached No. 31 on the UK Albums Chart and received strong critical acclaim. NME, Rolling Stone, and Smash Hits praised its balance of aggression and beauty, and it appeared on several end-of-year lists in 1985. Retrospectively, it has been recognized as one of the most influential debut albums in British rock history, featuring prominently in rankings by Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Q, and Slant Magazine.
