Yeah Yeah Yeahs' debut studio album, Fever to Tell, was released in April 2003 through Interscope Records. To maintain creative control, the band independently financed the album before signing with Interscope for distribution. Recorded at Headgear Studio in Brooklyn and co-produced by David Andrew Sitek of TV on the Radio, the album builds on the garage rock sound of their 2001 EP while incorporating art punk and dance-punk elements. Karen O's lyrics explore intimacy, sexuality, and heartbreak drawn from her experiences in New York's nightlife scene.

The album spawned four singles: "Date with the Night," "Pin," "Maps," and "Y Control." "Maps" became their first entry on the US Billboard Hot 100, and its music video received heavy rotation on MTV, helping triple album sales. Fever to Tell reached number 55 on the Billboard 200 and achieved gold certification in both the United States and United Kingdom, selling over one million copies worldwide.

Critics praised the album, with Rolling Stone calling it evidence that "the New York rock renaissance runs deeper and wilder than the Strokes." It received a Metacritic score of 85/100 and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. Fever to Tell is widely considered a seminal work of 2000s indie and garage rock, appearing on numerous decade-end and all-time best album lists, including Rolling Stone's Top 500 Albums of All-Time at number 377.
