Flood is the third studio album by Brooklyn-based alternative rock duo They Might Be Giants, released in January 1990 and marking their major-label debut with Elektra Records. Building on the success of their independent album Lincoln, Flood brought the Johns—Linnell and Flansburgh—into a new tier of visibility, buoyed by major-label backing and seasoned producers Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley. The album maintains the band’s signature quirky pop style while introducing more polished production and creative use of sampling and synth programming, including unconventional sounds like a kitchen sink and refrigerator.
The album spawned three singles: the breakout hit “Birdhouse in Your Soul,” a cover of “Istanbul (Not Constantinople),” and the promotional single “Twisting.” “Birdhouse” reached number three on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks, while “Twisting” hit number 22. Although “Istanbul” did not chart in the US, it became one of the band’s most recognizable songs, particularly among fans introduced to the band through Tiny Toon Adventures.
Flood peaked at number 75 on the Billboard 200 and remained on the chart for 22 weeks. Despite a modest chart performance at the time, the album became They Might Be Giants’ best-selling release and was eventually certified Platinum by the RIAA in 2009. It also achieved Gold status in the UK.
Critically, Flood received widespread acclaim for its inventiveness and intelligence, though some critics dismissed its novelty. Reviewers praised the band’s lyrical wit, melodic strength, and genre-blending arrangements. Over the years, Flood has been recognized as a landmark album in alternative and college rock, with retrospective reviews affirming its enduring appeal and influence. Reissues in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2023 have further cemented its status as a cult classic.
