Siouxsie and the Banshees' fourth studio album, Juju, was released on June 19, 1981, through Polydor Records. Recorded at Surrey Sound studio with Nigel Gray as co-producer, the album marked a return to guitar-based sound following the electronic elements of their previous album Kaleidoscope. Guitarist John McGeoch experimented with unconventional techniques, including using a Gizmo device on "Into the Light" and an EBow on "Sin in My Heart," while drummer Budgie's intricate percussion work featured prominently throughout.

The album reached number 7 on the UK Albums Chart and spawned two singles, "Spellbound" and "Arabian Knights." Critics praised Siouxsie's vocal performances and McGeoch's innovative guitar work, with Sounds noting her voice had "acquired a new fullness of melody" and describing the band's operation as "impressively cohesive." NME called it potentially the band's "second best" album and praised its consistency.

Juju remains a landmark post-punk album and has been widely influential. McGeoch's guitar playing earned him a spot on Mojo's list of the "100 greatest guitarists of all time," with Johnny Marr, Robert Smith, and John Frusciante all citing his work as influential. Artists including Radiohead, the Smashing Pumpkins, and Suede have cited the album as a reference point. In 2007, The Guardian included Juju on its "1000 Albums to Hear Before You Die" list.
