Irish rock band Inhaler burst onto the scene with their debut studio album, *It Won’t Always Be Like This*, released on July 9, 2021, via Polydor Records. Originally set to record in March 2020, the band’s plans were derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic, pushing the album’s creation into 2021. The eventual announcement of the album’s title in March signaled the start of a new chapter for the band, culminating in its mid-summer release.
To support the album, Inhaler embarked on an ambitious tour spanning the UK, Europe, and North America. Kicking off in the UK in late August 2021, the band brought their energetic live performances to North American audiences in September before circling back to Europe, starting in Dublin and wrapping up in Lisbon by July 2022. Along the way, they promoted the album with notable performances, including "Cheer Up Baby" on *The Late Late Show with James Corden* and *MTV Rocks Chart* with Jack Saunders, underscoring their rising profile.
Critical reception to *It Won’t Always Be Like This* underscored the band’s potential while recognizing the challenges of carving out a unique identity. Robin Murray of Clash called the album "the sound of a band coming into their own," capturing a sense of optimism amidst uncertainty. Charlie Brock of Gigwise noted that while Inhaler doesn’t yet possess the raw edge of peers like Fontaines D.C. or The Murder Capital, they’ve delivered a debut that is "really listenable and enjoyable."
The band’s lineage and rapid ascent have not gone unnoticed. Roisin O’Connor of The Independent acknowledged the skepticism surrounding their famous connections and early success but praised their ability to weave poignant themes of ennui, anxiety, and yearning into their music. "Inhaler want to be adored," she wrote. "With a debut like this, they probably will be."
Other critics were similarly impressed. Ella Kemp of *NME* described the album as "the triumphant completion of a journey years in the making," commending frontman Elijah Hewson for pushing himself beyond familial expectations. Lana Williams of The Line of Best Fit highlighted the album’s nostalgic guitar riffs and emotive storytelling, calling it a "spectacular debut" that promises a bright future.
With It Won’t Always Be Like This, Inhaler has delivered an album that is both accessible and aspirational, laying the foundation for a career that is just beginning to unfold.
