Joy as an Act of Resistance is the second studio album by Idles, released on August 31 2018 by Partisan Records. Recorded following the success of their debut album Brutalism, the record was produced by Paul Frazer and mixed by Adam Greenspan and Nick Launay. The band began work on the album in 2017, reassessing early material before completing the final set of songs.
The album takes its title from a poem by Toi Derricotte and centers on personal and social themes addressed through direct lyric writing. Its subject matter includes identity, masculinity, immigration, class, and contemporary British politics, alongside autobiographical material from vocalist Joe Talbot. The track “June” addresses the death of Talbot’s daughter, and the album also includes a cover of Solomon Burke’s “Cry to Me.”
Joy as an Act of Resistance was widely recognized on release and reached number five on the United Kingdom Albums Chart. It produced the singles “Danny Nedelko” and “Never Fight a Man with a Perm” and was supported by extensive touring across Japan, North America, and Europe.
