A Boy Named Goo marked a turning point for the Goo Goo Dolls, propelling the Buffalo-based trio into mainstream success. Released in 1995 via Warner Bros., the band's fifth studio album achieved double-platinum status within a year, solidifying their transition from scrappy alt-rockers to radio staples. It was also the final album to feature drummer George Tutuska, who was dismissed prior to its release and replaced by Mike Malinin.

A notable quirk in the album's tracklist stems from Tutuska's departure. His composition, Stand Alone, was included only on a promotional version of the album, as frontman John Rzeznik opted not to capitalize on his former bandmate’s contributions. The widely released edition instead featured Disconnected and Slave Girl, originally B-sides to the Only One single. The two tracks were covers, paying homage to underground punk influences—Buffalo’s Enemies and Australia’s Lime Spiders.

The album's breakout moment came with Name, the band's first major hit. The song’s distinctive acoustic-driven sound, a departure from their earlier material, was described by Rzeznik as the result of a fortunate accident—one that would ultimately reshape the band's sonic identity.

A Boy Named Goo also marked the band's final release under the Metal Blade Records imprint, closing a chapter on their rawer, punk-leaning origins before fully embracing the polished alternative rock that would define their later years.
