Subtitled A Symphony by the Electric Light Orchestra, Eldorado is the band’s fourth studio album and their first fully realized concept record. Jeff Lynne wrote the narrative before composing the music, following a daydreaming protagonist who escapes a dull reality through vivid fantasy worlds. The result is a richly orchestrated work that bridges symphonic arrangements with melodic rock.

Responding to criticism from his classically inclined father, Lynne hired a full orchestra for the first time, working alongside arranger Louis Clark to expand ELO’s sonic palette. The album’s sweeping overture and finale bookend standout tracks like “Boy Blue,” “Laredo Tornado,” and the US hit “Can’t Get It Out of My Head.”

Critically praised for its ambition and cohesion, Eldorado has been retrospectively compared to Sgt. Pepper in scope and musical variety. It has appeared on numerous “best of” lists, including Classic Rock’s “50 Albums That Built Prog Rock” and Rolling Stone’s ranking of the greatest progressive rock albums of all time.
