Released on August 22, 1983, Construction Time Again is the third studio album from Depeche Mode and the first to feature keyboardist Alan Wilder, who contributed key tracks like "Two Minute Warning" and "The Landscape Is Changing." Co-produced by the band alongside Daniel Miller, the album embraced cutting-edge technology—sampling tools like the Synclavier, Emulator, and portable field recordings brought a gritty industrial edge to their synth-pop sound.
Recorded at The Garden studio in London, with mixing completed at Hansa Studios in Berlin, the album expanded Depeche Mode’s sonic palette through unconventional methods, from toy instruments and construction-site sounds to found-object sampling. Lyrically, it shifted toward political and environmental themes, inspired in part by Martin Gore's travels in Thailand.
The album spawned singles such as “Everything Counts” and “Love, in Itself,” and reached No. 6 on the UK charts. Its sharp blend of melody and commentary marked a bold leap forward for the band, forging a darker, more textured direction that would define their evolving sound.
