America is the self titled debut album by the band America, originally released in January 1972. The first pressing did not include “A Horse with No Name,” which was issued separately as a single in late 1971 in Europe and in early 1972 in the United States. After the song became an international hit, the album was reissued with the track added.
The record reached number one on the Billboard album chart in the United States, where it remained for five weeks, and was later certified platinum by the RIAA. It produced two major singles, “A Horse with No Name” and “I Need You,” both of which charted highly in 1972. Other tracks such as “Sandman” and “Three Roses” also received significant FM radio airplay.
Musically, the album established America’s blend of acoustic folk and melodic pop, built around three part harmonies and understated arrangements. The cover features the three band members seated in front of an 1887 photograph depicting Crow prisoners in Montana, linking the record visually to a distinctly American historical image.
