Wishing Moon finds Wintersleep returning with renewed energy after a six year gap since In The Land Of. Recorded live in the Mojave Desert with producer Nicolas Vernhes, the album leans into an immediate, organic feel, with much of it tracked together in the room and shaped by the band’s instinctive interplay. The result draws on the group’s blend of indie rock, prog and folk tinged atmospherics, while pushing into heavier, more groove driven territory.
Lead single “I Got A Feeling” sets the tone, pairing driving rhythm and guitar grit with the expansive, melodic qualities long associated with the band. Elsewhere, songs like the title track and “Stranger Now” reflect the album’s desert born atmosphere, with shades of krautrock, fuzzed out alternative rock and the band’s more exploratory side.
More than two decades into their career, Wishing Moon captures a band still evolving, balancing the familiar depth of Wintersleep’s songwriting with a rawer and more immediate approach.
