5150 is the seventh studio album by Van Halen, released in March 1986 by Warner Bros. Records. It marked a major turning point for the band, introducing Sammy Hagar as lead vocalist following the departure of David Lee Roth. The album was recorded at Eddie Van Halen’s home studio of the same name and reflects a shift in both tone and approach.

Compared to earlier releases, 5150 places more emphasis on melody and structure, with a noticeable increase in ballads and mid tempo material alongside the band’s signature guitar driven sound. Eddie Van Halen remains central, but the overall mix and songwriting feel more balanced, reflecting the new lineup’s dynamic and a move away from the looser, more irreverent style of the Roth era.

Despite initial skepticism around the lineup change, the album was a commercial breakthrough, becoming the band’s first to reach number one on the Billboard 200. Over time, it has come to be viewed as a strong starting point for this phase of the band, showing a more polished and cohesive version of their sound while maintaining their core identity.
