Mac DeMarco's third studio album, This Old Dog, was released on May 5, 2017, through Captured Tracks. Following the release of Another One, DeMarco moved from his isolated Queens home to Los Angeles to create the album. He demoed a full album but found that moving to a new city and starting a new life took time, causing the songs to sit longer than usual and allowing him to "really get to know the songs."
The album spawned four singles: "My Old Man" and "This Old Dog" in January 2017, which are the first two tracks on the album, followed by "On The Level" and "One More Love Song" in April 2017. The album leaked on April 13, 2017, ahead of its official release.
This Old Dog received positive reviews from critics, earning a Metacritic score of 79/100. Pitchfork rated it 7.9/10, while Uncut gave it 8/10. The album marked a shift in DeMarco's creative process, as he typically writes, records, and releases quickly, but this time allowed the material to develop over a longer period.
