The Recent Past is the tenth studio album by Canadian singer songwriter Hayden, released in 2026 through his own Hardwood Records. The album continues his focus on family, memory, relationships, and everyday life, with much of the writing concerned with the tension between looking back at the recent past and remaining present.
Hayden handled much of the recording himself before giving the final mixes to engineer Tom Schick, known for his work with Wilco, Jeff Tweedy, Mavis Staples, and Willie Nelson. Additional musicians include drummer Adam Hindle, pedal steel player Matt Kelly, fiddler Miranda Mulholland, and upright bassist Ben Whiteley.
The album was introduced by "Time Has Been More Kind," which Hayden described as one of the most country influenced songs he has recorded. Inspired in part by traditional country arrangements, the track features brushed drums, pedal steel, fiddle, and upright bass. The Recent Past contains eleven songs, including "This Beautiful Day," "Bombs Away," "Outta Nashville," and "Small Town Airport Restaurant."
