Tumbleweed Connection is the third studio album by Elton John, recorded at Trident Studios in London in March 1970 and released in the United Kingdom in October 1970 and the United States in January 1971. Written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin, with the exception of “Love Song” by Lesley Duncan, the album is structured as a concept record drawing on country, western, and Americana themes.

Although neither John nor Taupin had visited the United States at the time, the album reflects their interest in American roots music, particularly the influence of the Band. Musically, it moves away from conventional pop structures, favoring flowing arrangements that blend piano led songwriting with folk, country rock, and orchestral elements. Several tracks originated during sessions for the previous Elton John album, with additional overdubs completed specifically for this release.

Tumbleweed Connection reached number two on the United Kingdom Albums Chart and number five on the United States Billboard 200. It was certified gold in the United States in 1971 and later platinum in 1998. The album has since been recognized as a key early work in John and Taupin’s catalog and was ranked among Rolling Stone’s 500 greatest albums of all time.
