Released in September 1965, Otis Blue is the third studio album by Otis Redding and widely regarded as one of the most essential soul records of all time. Recorded almost entirely over a 24-hour session at Stax Studios in Memphis, the album features Redding backed by Booker T. & the M.G.’s, members of the Mar-Keys and the Memphis Horns, and pianist Isaac Hayes.
The album blends Redding originals with covers of Sam Cooke, the Rolling Stones, and other R&B staples. Tracks like “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” “Respect,” and “Satisfaction” showcase Redding’s emotionally charged vocal style, pairing raw intensity with Southern soul grooves.
A commercial and critical breakthrough, Otis Blue topped the US R&B chart and became Redding’s first major crossover success. Its legacy continues to grow, with frequent appearances on lists such as Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and Time magazine’s All-Time 100 Albums.
