Game, Dames and Guitar Thangs is the first and only solo album released during the lifetime of Eddie Hazel, best known as the lead guitarist for Parliament-Funkadelic. Issued in 1977, the album offered Hazel a rare opportunity to step into the spotlight, showcasing his distinctive guitar work and singular musical voice outside the P-Funk collective.

The album features a mix of original compositions and ambitious reinterpretations, including bold covers of The Beatles’ “I Want You (She’s So Heavy),” The Mamas & the Papas’ “California Dreamin’,” and Bootsy’s Rubber Band’s “Physical Love.” Hazel also transforms “Wars of Armageddon,” originally from Funkadelic’s Maggot Brain, into a new instrumental titled “What About It?”, reworking the material with a sharper focus on guitar.

Despite being released on a major label, the album was quickly deleted from Warner Bros.’ catalog, and original copies soon became collector’s items among funk enthusiasts. Its scarcity added to its mystique, and over time it became regarded as a cult classic within the P-Funk canon.

Though Hazel continued to contribute to Parliament-Funkadelic projects, this album stands as his most personal and fully realized solo work. It remains a powerful testament to his influence on the sound of psychedelic funk and his lasting legacy as one of the genre’s most expressive guitarists.
