The Soul Album is a 1966 release by Otis Redding and one of the records that further established his reputation as one of the defining voices of 1960s soul. Issued by Atlantic Records, the album combines original material with reinterpretations of songs by artists including Sam Cooke, Eddie Floyd, Roy Head, and Smokey Robinson.

The sessions feature guitarist Steve Cropper, a key figure in the Stax Records house band, who also co wrote several of the album’s tracks. Throughout the record, Redding moves between energetic soul performances and slower, more reflective moments, highlighted by the ballad “Cigarettes and Coffee”.

The Soul Album reached the Billboard LP chart shortly after its release and remained on the listings for several months, while also performing strongly on the R and B albums chart. Over time it has come to be viewed as part of the core run of mid 1960s recordings that defined Redding’s approach to Southern soul.
